On June 19, the PubTech Conference 2024 was successfully held at the China National Convention Center in Beijing. The theme of the conference was "The Future of Publishing Empowered by AI". He Manchao, Academician and President of the Open Science Promotion Consortium and the Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering, attended the conference and delivered the opening speech.
In his speech, Academician He Manchao pointed out that in the field of engineering rock mechanics, AI can help identify different types of rock masses through the analysis and processing of large amounts of rock data, and further explore their physical and mechanical properties. Additionally, AI technology can construct rock mass models and failure prediction models. Based on various factors such as rock mechanics parameters, geological conditions, and construction plans, AI can predict potential rock mass deformation and failure states. Academician He stated that as a crucial avenue for cultural production and the transmission of civilization, publishing will undoubtedly accelerate the progress of social knowledge and the development of civilization with the support of AI technology.
During the conference, Niels Peter Thomsa, President for Springer Nature Greater China, Managing Director Books, announced the launch of the "Artificial Pen Project" AI-generated book writing program in China. In collaboration with Academician He Manchao’s team and CNPIEC, they will jointly complete the book "The Research Progress of Rock Dynamics Mechanics," opening a new chapter in scientific publishing. Zhang Jichen, Deputy General Manager of China Publishing Group Corporation, hosted the conference. Lin Liying, General Manager of China National Publications Import & Export (Group) Corporation (CNPIEC), delivered a speech. Representatives from Peking University, Intellectual Property Publishing House, Elsevier, Shanghai Data Exchange, and Huawei Reading engaged in deep discussions on the full industry chain of AI computing power, algorithms, and content production in publishing, providing a comprehensive, multi-angle, and in-depth ideological exchange on new AI strategies for publishing. Specialized dialogues were held on the application scenarios of AI in academic publishing and the policies and practical strategies for the cross-border circulation and transaction of academic data. CNPIEC Digital Technology (Beijing) Co., Ltd. released "Si Gua" LUFFAAI—a customized large model trained independently for researchers. The Shanghai Data Exchange, in conjunction with the Digital Publishing Institute of Wuhan University and CNPIEC, jointly released the "Research Report on Policies and Practical Strategies for the Cross-Border Circulation and Transaction of Academic Data".
The conference was hosted by CNPIEC and co-organized by major partners such as the Shanghai Data Exchange and Huawei Reading. It aimed to explore how AI technology can inject new vitality into the publishing industry and shape a new publishing ecosystem. Over 200 representatives witnessed the ideals and enthusiasm of publishers and technology practitioners. The 2024 Publishing and Technology Innovation Conference was not only a grand exchange event but also a global publishing industry development trendsetter, carrying the important mission of academic forefront and international openness.
