2024 Seismic and Fault Measurement Forum and International Joint Laboratory Council on Energy and Environment Successfully Held

From February 27 to 29, 2024, the Seismic and Fault Measurement Forum and the International Joint Laboratory Council on Energy and Environment were held in Beijing and Sanmenxia. Academician He Manchao, Secretary of the Party Committee and President of the Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering, and Director of the National Key Laboratory of Disaster Prevention and Intelligent Construction in Tunnel Engineering, presided over the meeting. The forum was attended by prominent figures including Wang Fuming, Vice Director of the National Key Laboratory of Disaster Prevention and Intelligent Construction in Tunnel Engineering, Professor Cui Ximin, Vice President of China University of Mining and Technology (Beijing), Fan Fuzhong, Secretary of the Sanmenxia Municipal Party Committee, Professor Wang Fawu, President of the International Association for Geo-Disaster Reduction and Foreign Academician of the Engineering Academy of Japan, Professor Sergio Fontoura from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, Professor Coli Massimo from the University of Florence, Professor Teuku Faisal Fathani from Gadjah Mada University, Professor Alexander STROM from the Russian Hydrological Engineering Bureau, Associate Professor Lohrasb Faramarzi from Isfahan University of Technology, and Professor Xu Xiwei, Vice President of the Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering.

2024 Academic Seminar and Council Meeting of International Joint Laboratory for Energy and Environment (Sanmenxia)
Academician He Manchao emphasized that energy and environmental issues are global concerns that significantly impact human survival and development. This international academic forum addressed the forefront of global scientific research, focusing on energy and environmental issues, seismic fault measurement, and earthquake prediction. It facilitated extensive and in-depth exchanges on the latest theories and innovative practices, actively exploring sustainable energy development and environmental protection models. The forum also positively contributed to the international comparative study on “Cross-Fault Measurement for Earthquake Prediction.”

On February 29, the International Joint Laboratory Council on Energy and Environment convened. The meeting reviewed and approved the International Joint Laboratory's constitution, member units, and council list. It was noted that 2024 marks a significant milestone with the launch of the flagship NPR new material industrialization production line, heralding a new era. The new council comprises 24 laboratories from seven countries and will continue to follow the "project selection-research enhancement-industrialization promotion" model to achieve more fruitful industrial research outcomes both domestically and internationally.

Following the meeting, representatives visited the Academician Industrial Park—He's Steel Production Base Project and the Yellow River Ecological Corridor for on-site inspection and research.

This forum was co-hosted by the Sanmenxia Municipal Party Committee of the Communist Party of China, the Sanmenxia Municipal Government, the Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering, the National Key Laboratory of Disaster Prevention and Intelligent Construction in Tunnel Engineering, and the International Joint Laboratory on Energy and Environment (Sanmenxia). The event was attended by nearly 50 representatives from various institutions, including the State Key Laboratory of Geological Disaster Prevention and Geological Environment Protection, the National Key Laboratory of Explosion Shock Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, the National Key Laboratory of Explosion Science and Safety, the International Research Institute for Neutron Science, the Shandong Key Laboratory of Marine Environment and Geological Engineering, the Hebei International Joint Research Center for Underground Space Development and Utilization, the Zhejiang-Singapore International Joint Laboratory of Urban Renewal and Future Cities, Kyoto University, Qingdao University of Technology, and the Urban-Rural Integration Demonstration Zone of Sanmenxia.
