Academician Manchao He, the president of the CSRME, and his entourage investigated the Sichuan-Tibet Railway railway site

The CSRME implemented the action plan entitled "Deep Integration of Scientific and Technological Innovation with Real Economy". Academician Manchao He, the president of the CSRME, and his academic team conducted a site visit from July 17 to 21, 2022 at the Tibet and Sichuan sections of the CZ Railway.

On the morning of July 18, 2022, the president Manchao He and his entourage went to the entrance of the Shergyla Mountain Tunnel to observe the surrounding rock failure after rockburst. In the afternoon, they went to the No.4 and No.5 cross-cavity of the Layue Tunnel for investigation and inquired about the rock temperature, water temperature, heat source control, cooling and safeguard measures taken in the cave. Subsequently, a symposium was held in the project department of the China Railway Tunnel Bureau. At the meeting, the experts of the China Railway Tunnel Bureau reported the rockburst issues in details and risk management methodology encountered during the TBM excavation of the Shergyla Mountain Tunnel. with the discussion contents the difference between rockburst and brittle failure, rockburst mechanism and its prevention and control technology. Academician Manchao He gave detailed answers one by one, and provided suggestions in terms of rockburst formation mechanism, classification, occurrence timing, influencing factors, etc. At the same time, he elaborated the differences between rockburst and brittle failure, and proposed the "Methods, Tools and Techniques" for Hard Rock Rockburst Prevention and Control based on the Excavation Compensation Method.

The experts of China Railway No.5 Engineering Group reported the construction of Layue Tunnel under high and low temperature and ultra-high temperature hot water condition, and consulted with Academician Manchao He on issues such as the influence of high-temperature hot water on the stability of surrounding rock and durability of support system.

Academician Manchao He gave detailed answers one by one, and put forward a development-oriented governance plan based on the guiding principle of protecting natural ecosystems, and transformed negative ecological products into positive ecological products by using advanced technology. At the same time, in consideration of heat damage, he proposed the principle of three advanced treatments, namely earlydetection pre-grouting, and pre-reinforcement, to reveal the distribution characteristics of hot water, targeted grouting, and precise reinforcement. The technicians and experts who attended the meeting spoke highly of Academician He's scientific spirit of conscientious scholarship and his explanations in simple language, easy-to-understand, and solving practical problems.

On the afternoon of July 19, 2022, the president Manchao He and his entourage went to the No.1 cross-cavity of the Kangding No.2 Tunnel to investigate the water inrush, and then held an exchange meeting in the project department of China Railway 12th Bureau Group. The meeting was presided over by the chief engineer of China Railway Construction Co., Ltd. Mr. Shengxiang Lei. At the meeting, the relevant engineers of China Railway 12th Bureau Group reported the water inrush in the No.1 cross-cavity of the Kangding No.2 Tunnel. Academician He asked the technicians about the flow rate, water pressure, clarity, particle size and shape of various water inrush points. The experts participated in the meeting conducted in-depth discussions and fully exchanged opinions on the problems encountered in the process of tunnel excavation.

On the morning of July 20, 2022, the president Manchao He and his entourage went to the No.2 inclined shaft of the Kangding No.2 Tunnel to investigate the construction under water-rich conditions, and held an exchange meeting in the project department of China Railway 12th Bureau Group. The meeting was presided over by the chief engineer of China Railway Construction Co., Ltd. Mr. Shengxiang Lei. At the meeting, the relevant engineers of the China Railway 12th Bureau Group made a detailed report on the engineering situation of the No.2 inclined shaft of the Kangding No.2 Tunnel, the project progress, the construction technical difficulties, the water inrush in the tunnel, and the measures taken. Academician He asked relevant technicians about regional geology, water inrush at the cave over time, and water pressure. The experts at the meeting fully discussed and exchanged views on scientific and technical issues encountered during the construction of the No.2 inclined shaft of the Kangding No.2 Tunnel.
 
On the afternoon of July 20, 2022, a special meeting was organized to discuss the difficult technical issues related to the tunnel construction in the Sichuan section of the CZ Railway. The meeting was presided over by Cailiang Liu, the Deputy General Manager of the CZ Railway (Sichuan) Co., Ltd. and the Commander of the Kangding Project Department. At the meeting, the water damage situation in the Kangding No.2 Tunnel was first reported, and then Academician Manchao He made a report entitled "The mechanism of water and mud inrush in the No.1 cross-cavity of the Kangding No.2 Tunnel and its prevention and control measures", the experts at the meeting fully discussed and exchanged views on scientific and technical issues encountered during the construction of the Kangding No.2 Tunnel. Prof. Xiaojie Yang, the secretary general of the CSRME, introduced the basic situation of the scientific and technological innovation consortium "National Major Project-State Key Laboratory" and the operation mechanism of the "Three Forms One Forum", and established an academic and technical exchange platform for industry-university-research applications, and to better serve CZ Railway construction, as well as provide technical consultation and innovation services.
